Acai is an Antioxidant Powerhouse

Acai is an Antioxidant Powerhouse

There have been several studies that examine the antioxidant level of different fruits and vegetables. Many claims have been made regarding which food has the highest value. I say – it really doesn’t matter which has the highest ORAC level because there are so many other factors to consider in deciding whether to include a food or product in your diet. It is undisputed that Acai has one of the highest ORAC levels of any food. But there is so much more to this amazing berry. First off, frozen acai puree makes an incredibly delicious smoothie or acai bowl. If you haven’t had an acai bowl yet, you have to try it. It is all the rage and for good reason – healthy and delicious. The thick frozen acai makes the perfect base for fruit and nut toppings. Acai bowls are great for breakfast, lunch, or post workout recovery meal.
In addition to antioxidants, acai provides amino acids and essential fatty acids. An excerpt from The Perricone Promise:
Acai pulp contains:
* A remarkable concentration of antioxidants that help combat premature aging, with ten times more antioxidants than red grapes and ten to thirty times the anthocyanins of red wine.

* A synergy of monounsaturated (healthy) fats, dietary fiber, and phytosterols, to help promote cardiovascular system and digestive tract health.

* An almost perfect essential amino acid complex in conjunction with valuable trace minerals, vital to muscles.

The fatty acid content in acai resembles that of olive oil, and is rich in monounsaturated oleic acid. Oleic acid is important for a number of reasons. It helps omega-3 fish oils penetrate the cell membrane; together they help make cell membranes more supple. When the cell membrane is kept supple, all hormone, neurotransmitter, and insulin receptors function more efficiently. This is particularly important because high insulin levels create an inflammatory state, and, as you know, inflammation causes aging.
